When to schedule your renewal

Timing matters: the city won't accept a renewal too early, and a lapse can bring tickets.

1

About 60 days out

Book your assessment. That leaves time for lab results and for fixing anything that's found.

2

The final 30 days

Submit your new report on the city portal. The city won't take a renewal earlier than 30 days before expiration.

3

Before it expires

Your new two-year certificate starts with no gap and no ticket risk.

Renewal isn't the same as last time

The rules changed in 2024. Here is what landlords renewing now need to know.

A risk assessment is required. Since October 18, 2024, Cleveland requires a lead risk assessment rather than a clearance exam. If your last certificate came from a clearance, expect a more thorough visit this time.

The report must be recent. Submit it through the Citizen Access Portal within 90 days of the inspection date.

Hazards come with a deadline. If the assessment finds problems, the city expects progress on the fixes within 90 days.

Letting it lapse is expensive. An expired certificate can bring $200 civil tickets, a $50 late fee if unpaid, and a lien on your tax bill.

Tired of renewing? A full lead inspection plus risk assessment can qualify a property for a 20-year exemption instead. Ask us whether yours is a candidate.

Not sure when yours expires? Call us with the address and we'll look it up and tell you when to book.

Lead Safe Certificate renewal FAQ

How long is a Cleveland Lead Safe Certificate good for?

Two years from the date it's issued.

How early can I renew?

The city accepts renewals no earlier than 30 days before expiration. Book the assessment a bit before that so the report is ready when your window opens.

My certificate already expired. Now what?

Book an assessment right away. Until you're recertified, the property is out of compliance and can be ticketed.

Not to start a new certificate. Since October 2024, Cleveland requires a lead risk assessment.

How do I find my expiration date?

It's on your certificate, and you can check the city's Citizen Access Portal. Or call us and we'll look it up for you.
